Traditional fuels

Traditional fuels, primarily firewood and charcoal are the main energy carriers for cooking on Zanzibar.

Unsustainable logging is a major environmental problem on the islands, and substitution of traditional fuels with modern energy carriers is a key policy objective. Unfortunately, the data collected on traditional fuels on Zanzibar is unreliable, because it excludes the considerable volume of illegal logging and imports.
