In 2014 ZECO and the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Tanzania entered into four year program to strengthen the maintenance capacity of ZECO.
While the project has provided much needed funding for critical maintenance activities on the existing grid, its core objective is to improve the sustainability of the power systems on Zanzibar through strengthening the capacity of ZECO to identify corrective as well as preventive maintenance needs, and implement the same.
A full Electrification Maserplan for Zanzibar, and a feasibilty study for a five MW PV solar plant has also been prepared as part of the project.
The ZECO Maintenance Unit Support Project is implemented by Multiconsult AS of Norway.
